Clare Balding at BGC Charity Day

Sports legend Clare Balding is about to hit the trading floor! She’s here at the #BGCCharityDay2023 raising money for The Charlie Waller Trust – a worthwhile charity that helps people struggling with their mental health across the UK.

The Charlie Waller Trust was founded by the Waller family in 1997 after they lost their son and brother Charlie to suicide. They’ve since become one of the most respected mental health charities in the UK and aim to stop the stigma around depression and provide help to those in need.

Today, Clare will be stepping into a trader’s shoes to raise some funds to help her chosen charity. We’re rooting for you, Clare!

Clare Balding is here for the #BGCCharityDay2023 supporting the Charlie Waller Trust by hitting the trading floor to raise some funds. Of the charity, she said, “I’m here with the Charlie Waller Trust, which is a really effective charity, helping in the mental health space. So half of people with mental health issues, actually, they start before they’re 14 years old. And this is a charity that focuses particularly on that teenage group, but is there to help parents and teachers and anyone who’s in a position of guardianship, really, where they notice a change of behaviour, they become concerned about it, they don’t know what to do.

“Parents, so often, teachers, as well, they know there’s something up here, but they don’t know what they should say, how to help effectively. And that’s where the Charlie Waller trust comes in.

“It’s set up in the name of somebody whose family I knew and he would have been the same age as me if he was still with us a bit older, but you know, and it’s just absolutely tragic when no one knows what to do. And they recognise a problem, but they don’t know where to turn.

“And so the Charlie Waller Trust comes in, we’ll put people together with the right kind of help, but also will deliver courses in schools, so that the school knows how to cope. And that’s where I think they’re most effective. But obviously, they want to deliver that free to schools, and it costs money to do it. So that’s why we need to raise funds. And that’s why I’m here.”

Good luck today, Clare!
